2008 MINUTES FROM THE ANNUAL MEETING OF THESPORTS COMMITTEE FOR MICHIGAN AAU GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

The meeting took place at The Summit in Lansing at 6:00 P.M. on Sunday August 31, 2008.

The annual meeting is scheduled for the final Sunday in August every year. Not realizing that this year that date was part of the Labor Day weekend. As a consequence there were only four people at the meeting. Even The Summit had closed for Sunday and Monday ( and failed to notiry us). The meeting was held just outside the locked doors of The Summit.

Present were Terry Dolan – the Director of Michigan AAU Girls’ Basketball, William Jones of The Legion, Burke Gaddis of the Michigan Monarchs, and Jason Slater of Lakeside Hoops.

The meeting was called to order at 6:05 by Terry Dolan who then gave a brief synopsis of the 2007-8 season. This was the first year of adjustment to the change of the MHSAA girls’ basketball season to the winter. AAU numbers were down drastically in the DQT – from 300 last year to 184 this year. Overall membership (the number of AAU cards purchased) was down by almost 42% from the previous year.

The association did have a fall season which was a success and also sponsored two state friendship tournaments– one in the fall and one in the winter. 172 teams participated in those two tournaments – 18 in the fall and 154 in the winter.

The treasurer’s report was passed out and reviewed. We are in good shape financially – ending up with as much money as we started with at the beginning of the year.

The two proposals were discussed. Proposal A dealt with lowering the cost of the association tournaments. This was made possible by paying the hosts less per game but allowing them to charge more at the gate. The hosts should make more money and the association will save $15 a game. Unfortunately the parents/spectators will pay the dollar increase at the gate and finance all of this. None-the-less, a five dollar admission fee is good for all day and is less that what many high schools charge for just one game.

Proposal B was a new format for the 14-19 DQT and D-2 State Tournaments. The format still guarantees four games but is not a true double elimination format. Attached is a separate document that explains the proposal.

Both Proposals were passed by a unanimous vote.

There were no additional comments that any of the member wished to make and the meeting was adjourned at 6:33.
